Welcome

The SCCC was founded in 1972. It first began with regular meetings at Ivy and Raymond Heng's house. The fellowship of believers then was called the Sheffield Chinese Christian Fellowship (SCCF). They mainly consisted of university students and the ministry was conducted in English. There were great support from the Chinese Overseas Christian Mission (COCM) and teams from the Chinese Christian Fellowships in Birmingham and Manchester (BCCF and MCCF) who regularly attended the meetings.

In 1974, the Sunday school ministry was first held at Sheffield YMCA where members dedicated their time to teaching Cantonese and English to children and parents, respectively. This would then be followed by bible study, serving of refreshments and fellowship.

In 1975, the SCCF Fellowship Centre (at 12 Watson Road) was founded by the fellowship (with approximately 20 members). This could not have been achieved without the grace of God as it required generous offerings from members and a mortgage take-up. Recognising the growing importance of the works being done in Sheffield, several COCM staff members were sent to Sheffield to help build the church.

The SCCF was the first to host the North England Easter Conference (NEEC), which was started in 1977 and held at Cliff College. The aim was to unite Chinese Christian Fellowships from northern parts of England.

In 1978, the first Cantonese speaking bible study was conducted to help reach out to Cantonese-speaking people (believers and non-believers).

In 1979, the Cantonese fellowship committee was formed. The English and Cantonese fellowships were named Student Fellowship and Resident Fellowship, respectively. God's blessing fell upon both fellowships as they continued to expand and grow in numbers. However, this had also caused a division in the two for a period of time. Realising this, both fellowships began drafting a church 'umbrella' structure that would soon form a constitution of believers. In 1989, God opened a way that led to the formation of the Sheffield Chinese Christian Church.

Since then, the church continued to grow year after year. In 1991, a church building situated at Anns Road, Heeley was bought over by SCCC. The church's very first church worker was employed that very year. A pastoral committee was also set up to meet pastoral needs of its members. The first Mandarin speaking bible study group was started in 1992. Again, this rapidly grew in numbers. Weekly meetings and Sunday services continue to be held at the church building until this very day.

The search for a full time minister of the church was eventually followed by the appointment of the first church pastor in 1993. At the same time the work amongst the Mandarin believers was greatly aided by the secondment of a COCM pastor couple to Sheffield to work in this area.

Looking back over the past thirty years of Sheffield Chinese Christian Church, God has indeed been faithful. The church continues to grow despite being made up largely of students who serve the church for an average period of 3 to 4 years. Members that came to know the Lord, continue to serve Him back at their home country.

God has indeed allowed the church to grow from an acorn to an oak tree.
